Fayetteville Say University plans to submit an application with the say Board of Nursing in hopes of having its nursing program reinstated.
On Monday, Chancellor saint Anderson announced that the university’s Might nursing graduates scored 100 percent on the licensure exam, marking a continued turnaround in the program.
Should the say board approve the application during its February meeting, the nursing program could resume in the fall.
“That’s up to the nursing board,” Anderson said. “That decision will come from them.”
In Might 2009, he suspended admissions to the department’s four-year bachelor’s program. That, in effect, shut down the program after the graduation of the nursing students in May.
The suspension is for the four-year generic program only.
Of the 27 nursing students taking the National Council Licensure Examination, all passed on the first attempt. Those students are the last graduates from the original four-year nursing program.
FSU’s pass rate rose from 39 percent in 2008 – the lowest in the say – to 88 percent in 2009. The say Board of Nursing requires institutions to have a pass rate of 83 percent over a three-year period.
“We actually had planned both of those scores,” Anderson said. “We were to work closely with the two remaining classes in the pipeline and make sure they were highly successful.”
FSU was among six of the more than 70 nursing programs in the say to achieve a perfect pass rate on the exam, according to a news release from the university.
“I think the future is very bright,” stated Dr. Afua Arhin, chairman of the FSU Department of Nursing since Sept. 1. “We have a brand-new building. We have a lot of plans in the works. I’m very optimistic that we have a pretty bright future.”
Anderson stated the scores demonstrate what can be done when students, power and administrators work as a team.
“I think they got a lot of extra attention and extra time to focus on passing that exam,” he stated Monday. “In other words, they took the content and skills from the courses and learned to actually apply it. They got a lot of practice with it, more than anything.”
The university’s 100 percent passing accomplishment stands in sharp contrast to years past.
The academic program in the four-year FSU School of Nursing had experienced accreditation problems and high unfortunate rates of its graduates. Infighting and a poor public perception also plagued the department.
The program has operated under a warning since 2007 because of low scores on the licensing exam and violations of say rules.
“It was a new program,” stated Arhin, who is the fifth chairman of the nursing school. “I think what happens with a program, people need to sort it out.”
Arhin stated she wasn’t surprised by FSU’s latest batch of scores. She came to Fayetteville Say from Grambling Say University in Louisiana, which she stated had similar problems in its nursing department. Arhin was an associate dean at Grambling.
“I’ve done this before,” she said. “The plan of action was right on target.”
“Sometimes, when you’re trying to fix problems, you just fix the problems with Band-Aids. This time, it was total overhaul from begin to finish,” Arhin said. “Fortunately, they identified students with deficiencies. When they were identified, they had to decide whether they needed remediation or not. I think in the past, they had some issues there” by identifying the deficiencies too late.
Anderson had stated he intended to resurrect the program after a reorganization. Initially, that overhaul was projected to take three years.
“It has taken two,” he said. “That shows you what dedication can do. The most important thing is rebuilding your faculty. We want to make sure when we reinstate the program, it’s done in a correct way.”
Forty students are enrolled in the spring as part of a program that offers nurses with an associate’s degree a bridge to a baccalaureate education.
FSU has established a relationship with Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and installed a dual enrollment agreement with Fayetteville Technical Community College. The agreement grants students who complete an associate’s degree in nursing at FTCC to continue studying toward a bachelor’s degree at FSU.
