Brighton, N.Y. —

A member of the Geriatric Pilots Association, Bob Ferris, of Pittsford, this day helped visitors at the Bagel Bin Café in Brighton remember the anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day.

Ferris started training as a pilot with the Navy in 1942.

After transferring to the Marines, he saw action in the Pacific Theater, particularly in Okinawa, an island off the mainland of Japan, from 1944 to 1945.

Although the Marines didn’t keep official track, he checked his log book and discovered he flew 93 missions, which included close-air support for on-the-ground troops.

“I was lucky. I was shot down once, but I walked away from it,” Ferris said. “I prefabricated a lot of friends, and I lost a lot of friends.

In his words

Like many who served during World War II, the Asian bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941, prompted Ferris to enter the service.

It’s important for people to remember what happened on this date 69 years ago.

For one, many veterans of the war are dying — and their stories in danger of being lost forever.

Also, he said, for reasons that resonate in today’s world.

“I think people should realize there are some other people in the world who don’t have much regard for life.”
